My Project
Our students have rhythm, and now they need real drums to bring their musical dreams to life.
In our STEAM lab, the beats echo daily from bucket drums and giant plastic bins we've repurposed into instruments.
The energy is electric. What started as a creative rhythm break has become a full-fledged passion: our students want to create a real drumline. They're eager to perform for our school community, learn technique, build teamwork, and explore music as a serious art form.
We are a low-income school, and most of our students come from families that cannot afford instruments or private lessons. We don't have a dedicated music program or a music teacher, just me, their STEAM teacher, trying to turn Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math into something magical. Now, we're hoping to add another "M" for Music.
This project will directly benefit students in grades K–8 by giving them access to high-quality percussion instruments they would not otherwise experience. Many of our students have never held a real drumstick, let alone played a steel drum or a marching snare. The instruments chosen—snare drums and marching drums for our upper-grade drumline, a steel drum to expose students to diverse musical cultures, a gathering drum for community rhythm activities, and a variety of percussion instruments for younger students—are all intentionally selected to allow us to build a sustainable, inclusive music experience that grows with our students. The large gathering drum and smaller percussion items will help introduce rhythm and beat to our youngest learners, while the more advanced drums will allow middle school students to refine skills, lead performances, and even teach others.
