My Project
Our school has produced world-class musicians like Shep Shepherd, who played with Artie Shaw and many others, and Lee Morgan, who played with many legendary musicians including John Coltrane and appeared on the classic 1958 album Blue Train.
Sadly, our school—located in Kensington; a community deeply affected by the opioid epidemic—does not have an official music program and currently does not offer any music courses at this time.
Consequently, I have started a new after-school club: "Music Mondays." At this club, students have the opportunity to learn the basics of music theory, musical notation, guitar, piano, and percussion. I've also incorporated opportunities to try different instruments into in-class brain breaks during my Spanish classes.
So far, all the instruments used are my own personal property and do not include the instrument I feel most comfortable teaching—the drum set. I have been playing the drums for 26 years and have performed professionally for half of that time. Your donation would help me and my students revitalize the music tradition of our school community.
