Announcing the Afterschool Band program ! For the first time, three small groups of instrumentalists are coming together to create some amazing music! From jazz and Motown to pop and rock, these bands are making school history. However, to enable these young musicians to create the music they are capable of making, we need a drum set! Have you ever heard a jazz band without the spang-a-lang of the high-hat? Or a rock band without the drive of the bass drum? A complete drum set is what these students need to take their music to the next level. Read on, and we hope that you will support our new program!
Our School is one of the very few public schools in New York dedicated to meeting the special needs of intellectually gifted students in grades K-8. Our highly diverse student population comes from all five boroughs of the city and we serve over 500 students. We are also a new public school, just beginning our fourth year of operation. A majority of our music programming is funded by community donations, as the money allocated by the Department of Education is not sufficient to build a program that meets the needs of our students. These donations have successfully built a solid foundation for our music program – including a band, orchestra, and chorus program - but they fall short of covering some of the costs of growth and sustainability. One such cost is a complete drum set!
The Project
Our new Afterschool Band program currently has three distinct bands, each charged with selecting their own music and creating their own sound. The one thing holding these groups back is a complete drum set. Funding for a new drum set will enable these bands to develop a rhythm section, and take their music to the next level. The drum set will also be used in the 4th grade, 5th grade, and Middle School symphonic bands – transforming their rhythms sections as well.
