This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Rocking out and playing on stage with a live drummer ...oh the rush! Everyone is looking great, but our drummers can't roll and crash!!
I serve students 4th grade - high school, teaching "rock class" (think School of Rock).
I work at a low income public school where most students fall close to or below the poverty level. My students and classes vary not only in age, but fashions and tastes. I have a blast working with them all because everyday is an adventure!
My Project
Our drum sets have been beaten by some hard hitting drummers. In the past we have upgraded our cymbals, hardware, and skins. Now, our wonderful thrones that have served us well are retired. The drum thrones that we have had for four years have finally given out. One has two of the three legs broken off completely, and the other chair was donated to us (and was previously used). These resources will allow for us to not only play the part, but look the part as well. Currently, we are using two standard sitting chairs to play drums, which can at times be uncomfortable. The mic stand allows us to amplify the low ending kick drum that drives rock and roll. Higher frequencies projected on stage usually drown out the kick drum during performances. Currently, we are using a standard mic stand, but it does take up a lot of space on stage!
This project is important because my rock program continues to expand and as it continues to expand, more and more students show a great deal of interest.
With more children signing up, the equipment we use takes a beating (hence the upgrades to our equipment from what we originally started with). As I mentioned before, the started drum kits we currently posses have had some serious upgrades to ensure that we can keep the music flowing.
