This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from diverse ethnic, racial and socioeconomic backgrounds and teach me daily from their vast life experience. They come to our school at risk of not graduating and quickly blossom into scholars. We focus on building strong relationships with our students.
The resilience of my students impresses me everyday; they battle monumental obstacles and stereotypes, and come out breaking glass ceilings.
My students begin their tenure here dejected, having been sent away from a traditional high school. However, many of them experience a transformation here, and take on leadership roles. They may be pigeonholed as "bad kids" when they arrive, but they are not, they are scholars and scientists.
My Project
We live in a a Mediterranean ecosystem and California is perpetually in a drought. The garden beds, succulents, and seeds outlined in this project will allow my students to create a drought tolerant garden on our campus.
Through creating a drought tolerant garden, students will learn sustainable gardening techniques, water conservation and environmental stewardship.
In addition, it will add green space to our campus, and provide a habitat to insects and birds. We will plant milkweed, a California native plant, which also attracts Monarch butterflies.
This garden will be integrated into curriculum in both Earth Science and Biology in the Ecology and Natural Resource Units.
