My Students
I have 6th, 7th, and 8th grade middle school students who love visiting the media center to work on class projects in this collaborative learning space. Students visit the media center to work on projects across all curriculums. I also teach 7th and 8th grade Digital Media Publications which focuses on creating original media publications and productions tied to various content areas.
In the media center, students take an idea and have the freedom to run with it!
They have shown their excitement with hands-on learning activities and using technology to express their imaginations and enhance their creativity. Our students started calling this space "Innovation Station" - a hub for them to share ideas, design, create and discover using various technology resources.
My Project
Our students use the green room/recording studio in the media center every day for class projects and school news broadcasting. Recently, our second-hand sound mixer has become glitchy and unreliable. Digital Media students, classes visiting the media center, and school news crew members love using the recording room to showcase their ideas and bring those ideas to life. They would all love to have this updated sound mixer at their fingertips so that they can creatively explore and see their original ideas become reality on film!
In just 3 years, the needs of our media center have expanded tremendously.
Once we just had ONE single-camera to now having 6 cameras, 4 of which have microphone connectivity and could use some sound enhancement and options through a 12-channel sound mixer.
Our students have the option of using various microphone sets, depending on the needs of their recording project. Currently, they have corded XLR mics, 2 wireless lavalier sets, and one wireless handheld set. It is VERY cumbersome to disconnect and reconnect each microphone set to a camera when it is being used, which is why a sound mixer comes in so handy! By using a sound mixer, all of the microphones are connected to the mixer at once, which connects directly to a computer for recording/editing. The students simply choose which microphone inputs they want to use right there on the mixer's interface.
With this mixer, our students are able to have high-quality sound coming from 12 different input devices at once, including phones and other sources of audio/media.
But without a mixer, we would be limited to the number of students who could use microphones at once for one recording. While it simplifies the process of recording, it also gives students more options and enhances the quality of their production!
