My students need Hot Dots Pens and materials which will help them practice and check their math and reading skills independently as well as keep them engaged and entertained.
"Chances are only what we make them, and all [we] need," sang John Ondrasik. It's time our African-American students are given the chance they need.
Though our school is in the heart of one of the most influential African-American communities in the United States, more importantly, it is a school in need of improvement.
Our students have an overwhelming potential to succeed, but unfortunately it is negatively influenced by the challenges and road blocks put up in front of them every day. Located in the middle of an urban area, our high poverty students face challenges day in and day out. For some, coming to school is an escape from many things.
My Project
We want to make their "escape" fun and full of rich, meaningful, learning opportunities. Because our students have such individualized needs, in order to succeed we often have to work with our students one-on-one or in small groups. While the teacher is working with some students, the others need to be taking advantage of the instructional time as well. Our class enjoys hands-on learning where they get to learn through experience. Often, they are completing worksheets without knowing if they are doing well or filling it out correctly. These resources will give students immediate feedback as to whether or not they are understanding the work in front of them. They will be able to get this feedback independently without any teacher assistance. They will be able to use this immediate feedback to improve their weaknesses in reading comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, language skills, and mathematical problem solving.
One of our students said, "I feel kids in our school have ... to make the teachers and the principal know that we are smart and generous children and we love to learn.
My conclusion is that you don't have to be awesome and get everything right but you do have to try your best so that you can be rewarded." These students try their best daily but, in order for them to do their best they need to be given tools to help them succeed day in and day out. We hope you can help us share in their success.
