My Students

The quote, "Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life," is one that I stress to my struggling students daily. Reading allows people to imagine worlds and lives that were previously unknown to them. This reading corner will allow my students to cultivate a lifelong love for reading.

Our public charter school is located in Baltimore City.

The school serves grades 6 through 12 and focuses on specialized technology and health science tracks in the high school grades. I work with students in grades 6, 7, and 8, who are all considered at-risk students. These students are vivacious, eager, and always seeking support and guidance from their teachers. Because these students are at-risk, they need as much extra support and access to resources as possible. They have proven that once they are provided with that extra boost, they are able to exceed expectations!

My Project

I have found that my students are reading less and less as Xbox dominates their free time. Books provide an outlet for people to escape their own reality, while helping people explore new things and push their own boundaries. This is important to remember when promoting literature in a classroom; books can provide an insight to foreign situations or unknown things. Importantly, students who are exposed to situations within texts are apt to become more open-minded and understanding. I want to cultivate a love for reading in my students by providing them with an inviting classroom library that includes popular teen novel series like Twilight and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, two bean bag chairs, and a book shelf. Here, I will encourage them to self-select books that interest them and read in comfort.

Your donation will make a huge impact in my at-risk classroom.

My students, who are struggling learners, deserve the opportunity to become passionate about reading. By donating to my project you are enabling my students to select age-appropriate novels that interest them. You are also encouraging them to become more creative and thoughtful. Ultimately, this will allow my students to make connections to literature and create meaning for themselves, which is a vital step in achieving literacy.
