About My Students

Children in our neighborhood look at the sky and watch planes flying over them daily, yet have never been on an airplane. The students worldview is limited by lack of stimulating and engaging experiences. This project will allow young minds and motivation to the highest reaches as they take flight!

Students on campus have been interested in the rockets built from 2 liter bottles in their science classes when they study physics, but they want the opportunity to control and design even more complex flying machines. This project will expose them to such advanced technology.

When studying physics in 8th grade, students build an understanding of forces and motion. The best way for them to remember concepts is applying what they know in the real world. Drone technology is a highly engaging way to involve students in analysis of complex engineering and aeronautic principles. The students have devised several experiments that they would like to conduct on campus using the UAV and also a student-led competition for creative ways to utilize the machine. Students plan to create their own design for a future vehicle. This project will allow some of the poorest kids in the city to access some of the newest aeronautic technology. Through exposure to such awesome technology, many teens will be inspired to continue their pursuit of scientific endeavors and will cultivate a inquiry-based mentality about science topics and technology.

In Their Own Words

We are trying to win a drone to further understand things about flight and forces in nature. We will use the aircraft to learn about things like friction and gravity and other physics lessons. When we can experience flying an unmanned aerial vehicle at school, we will feel like we are already conducting research for the Jet Propulsion Lab, which many of our classes would love to work for someday. We want to use the best technology that we hear about in class and on the news sometimes. We will fly!

We know that we can capture some amazing images while flying the UAV and they can help us see the world in new ways and at the same time keep our interest in the science of flight. This new technology is so expensive, we never imagined we could use it, but this is our chance! We'll be responsible and professional about this drone project. We know how special it is to get to experience such awesome science tools at such an early age. We will become the next generation of engineers and astronauts.

Lots of times kids at our school don't get interested in the stuff they learn. They think school is boring and would rather play video games. This project will definitely get kids' attention! They will be lining up to control the UAV and see how it works. In our community there are lots of kids who want to work with their hands and do stuff like be a mechanic. This project will allow us to see that there are lots of options, like engineering and technology to get into college. We can aim higher!
