Help me give my students programmable drones, an obstacle course for racing them, and books to teach about drones -- the new technology and hope for the future.
My students are in their first year of middle school. They are eager and excited for all things science. Our Project Lead the Way curriculum provides students many opportunities to solve real-world problems that exist today and may exist in the future. This is an introduction to careers in science, technology, and engineering. In order to create the best possible learning environment for my students, I begin with helping them to develop a growth mindset. This enables them to persevere as they learn from failure since all of their solutions are innovative and new.
"Many of life's failures are people who didn't realize how close they were to success when they gave up." - Thomas Edison
"Success is a pile of failure. You're just standing on top of it."
These two quotes are examples of a growth mindset. We have posted them around the classroom and written them in our Engineering Notebooks.
Thanks for supporting my students!
My Project
My students are ready for the next steps in their robotics and programming learning. A drone is a complex machine; once you are able to peek inside, one STEM concept leads to another.
Since my students have had lots of exposure to robotics and programming, adding drones to our classroom would allow us to take the next steps in learning concepts like Bernoulli's principle while addressing Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in order to prepare students for a world where science literacy is increasingly necessary.
These drones and accompanying books that teach about them will help introduce my students to the real-world use and application of semi-autonomous robots and drone-use ethics. My next generation innovators will greatly benefit from this initial exposure in order to realize the potential of drones in their future to capture data during natural and man-made disasters, delivering stuff, surveying property, building inspections, assisting search and rescue, monitoring wildlife, assisting farmers, covering sporting events, assisting firefighting, and even transporting medicine to unreachable and/or remote areas to provide lifesaving measures.
