Drone Science

My students need a drone and a case to visualize and experience the physics of flight, force, mechanics, pressure and to gain a fresh perspective of our urban ecosystem.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Arsenie's classroom raised $2,022

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How many of you have ever been on an airplane? Two hands went up in a class of 34! It is this lack of experience that motivates me to expose students to new learning in the classroom! Flight and the physics of it, is one unique experience that can make every kid excited about scientific exploration.

My students are natural born scientists.

They just don't know it yet! They ask questions constantly, they want to learn, they crave new learning experiences, want to search for meaning, share their own experiences, and it is my job to facilitate and give them access to that knowledge and the skills they need to get the answers they seek. Over 90% of my students (and the students of our academic institution) receive free lunch and 95% of them are Latino. Virtually all of them live in an urban setting and many would consider themselves "not good at science". How wrong they are!!!! My students thrive in practical settings, they're visual/ kinesthetic/auditory learners, do best with hands-on projects, where the theory learned is put in practice, especially in a class like physics. Sometimes our laws, formulas (math!) and concepts are a tough sell- and any visual and physical demonstration and experience help inspire them or answer any questions and misconceptions about the topic.

My Project

Students will finally get to see and experience flight in action, beyond the mathematical equations and formulas. They will get to use the theory learned in class in regards to the physics involved, and also create flight plans and test out their flight variables using this drone. They will collect data in the form of aerial video and photography, as well as flight data (altitude, velocity, temperature, latitude/longitude, air pressure, force) in order to learn the challenges involved in flying. They will explore topics like velocity, acceleration, force, mass, pressure, as well as learn the basics of global positioning navigation. They will also explore the urban ecosystem we live in from a fresh perspective. This will hopefully lead into conversations regarding the ethics and legal implications of urban drone flying (commercial, personal or military), as well as spark interest in post secondary fields like engineering, math, computer science and environmental urban planning.

The hottest topics right now in political, scientific and educational circles is the flying and use of drones.

There is the military drone that makes the news, however, the drone as a scientific data collection tool is essential to expose students to the applicability of science- from the physics of flight, to engineering/programming, global positioning navigation, aerial photography, urban planning and even the ethics and legal implications of drone flight. Thank you for making this possible.
