My Students
At Post Falls Middle School making mistakes is part of our process towards mastery in math. We learn a lot from the questions we ask and the time we spend revisiting the things we didn't know yesterday.
When Post Falls Middle School Mathematicians talk about what we don't know, we emphasize that we don't know "insert concept" yet.
We make sure we annotate while we work and show what we know or what we would like to know before asking for help. Students see math class as a safe place to practice.
Many students in my 7th grade Math class has never been outside the Idaho/Montana/Washington area. Giving students access to tools that expand their world gives them more context about the math we use in class. Everyday in math is an opportunity to grow and learn. We leverage 21st century tools in the classroom to increase engagement and make better connections to the real world.
My Project
Student engagement in middle school Math centers on the ability of a teacher to make math meaningful. Using a drone equipped with a camera and an app that gives real time flight data would allow students to analyze given data, make mathematical predictions, and model their thinking using tables, charts and graphs.
The aerial footage from the drone will allow students to apply a new perspective to old types of problems.
Students will use the flight data to build linear equations with distance (y axis) and time (x axis). Drone elevation will be used to describe rational number addition and subtraction and the distances between points as an absolute value.
Angle relationships will be modeled using student angle actors photographed from above and given as prompts in class lessons.
The drone will function as a connection to future STEM career possibilities. Students in middle school now will in the future employ tools that may not currently exist to solve problems that have not yet been identified. A drone in the classroom can act as a step towards their exciting futures. Math can be fun. Maybe we just need to look at the numbers from above.
