Drone Math: Exploring Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus from the Sky
Help me give my students a hands-on learning experience by using drone technology to explore real-world math applications. With a drone, they can visualize algebraic functions, apply trigonometry, and analyze calculus concepts like rates of change.

My Project
As a high school math teacher at my high school, I am seeking to integrate innovative, hands-on technology into my Algebra, Precalculus, and Calculus classes. The use of drones in mathematics instruction will provide students with an engaging, real-world application of mathematical concepts, fostering deeper understanding and critical thinking skills. In Algebra, students can analyze drone flight data to create and interpret linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. In Precalculus, students can explore trigonometric functions, using the drone’s height and angle of elevation to apply sine, cosine, and tangent in real-world scenarios. In Calculus, students can study rates of change by examining how velocity and acceleration change over time, making abstract concepts like derivatives and integrals more concrete.
As we know, integrating technology like drones into lessons supports cross-disciplinary learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
It encourages problem-solving, critical thinking, and data analysis—skills essential for college and career readiness.
