My students need 8 Gateway Wizard golf putters, 2 Innova Champion Roc3 mid-range discs, and drivers in a variety of weights and styles to learn what disc works best.
"When you play a team sport you learn that it doesn't just come down to the best player, it comes down to working as a team, accepting decisions and understanding that people have different abilities.” ~ Ross Morrison It is important for children to get opportunities to play team sports. Team sports teach valuable skills, that children won't likely get from traditional classroom learning. A few of the benefits to team sports are friendship/camaraderie, cooperation, teamwork, leadership skills, and self-discipline.
My students come from generational, low-income families that frequently move from school to school within the school year.
The students at my school speak up to ten different languages. A few of the home languages for my school are Spanish, Vietnamese, and Burmese. Most students have little academic support at home. At our school, we strive to give our students every opportunity for success.
My Project
Students in grades 4, 5, and 6 will be invited to participate in an after school disc golf club. The students will learn the fundamentals of disc golf as well as have the opportunity to participate in tournaments as a team. We have a sponsor willing to provide transportation to disc golf tournaments, so children will be able to participate in the tournaments even if they do not have parental transportation available. Disc golf is a simple sport that people with all physical ability levels can play.
This project will allow our students to participate in a team sport that is not prohibitively expensive to continue playing throughout their lives.
Disc golf is a sport with low start up cost for individuals. The only specialized equipment people need to start playing is a disc. Our school is near enough to a regular disc golf course that students can walk or bike to a full course to play on their own after they have been taught the game. They will soon learn to play a fun game that can be played for the majority of the year. It encourages students to go outside and move!
