My Students
"Going Above and Beyond" is the expectation and the goal for everyone in my classroom, including the teacher! We strive every day, on every project, on every assignment, in our behavior and work habits to epitomize this statement. Becoming excellent readers is a huge part of this goal.
My classroom is filled each day with two groups of twenty-two fourth graders exhibiting a full range of reading abilities.
The classroom is full of activity as we fill every minute with reading and writing of some sort. Our school is a STEM magnet school drawing students from a large area so they come from many different cultures and socioeconomic levels.
My Project
Since a large portion of the time in my classroom is spent developing literacy, it is very important to have high interest books to make learning relevant, enjoyable, and FUN. Being a STEM school, we spend a large amount of time reading nonfiction material. When it comes time for the students to read for the pure enjoyment of a good story, I want to have a plethora of choices to fit the interests and reading levels of everyone. Jake Maddox Sports Stories for both girls and boys
appeal to many since they focus on the same extracurricular activities the students participate in outside of school.
Having this collection of high interest sports related literature in my classroom will help spark those reluctant readers.
These books are written at a level that will allow those that usually shy away from chapter books, to pick up a book that will capture their attention and make them feel successful. This will, in turn, lead to a greater level of literacy and remind us all that we can go "above and beyond" when motivated and given the opportunity.
