My Students
I teach elementary physical education in a multi-culturally diverse and socioeconomically disadvantaged urban neighborhood. I have kids from all walks of life, mostly African-American, Caucasian, and Hispanic.
When I first walked into my equipment closet, I noticed the school was in need of many items.
The school budget is tight and there isn't much left for equipment.
My students come from many types of homes (broken, single-parent, raised by relatives and foster students). When they come to my class, I want them to leave our school remembering all of the fun they had in physical education class and how much wonderful equipment they were given the chance to use and knowing that fitness and physical activity is fun.
My Project
I teach 120 primary students and we need mini basketballs for my lessons. My students need to learn ball control and dribbling skills as they enter into intermediate grades and begin playing competitive sports in physical education. The basketballs I have are not size appropriate for the primary grades and are too large for them to handle. If I had enough miniature basketballs, each student could practice during class with one and that way more practice could be taking place rather than trying to take turns. My intention is to limit down time during activities when most disciplinary problems arise.
