Dressing for Success

My students need community helper dress up clothes, community helper accessories to go with dress up clothes, and play shoes to go with clothes.

My Students

My prekindergarten students use play throughout their day to learn. Many of them consistently choose to play in the block and house area. While they are very creative with sheets and baby blankets, the addition of community helper clothes and accessories will help to encourage them further.

I teach prekindergarten in Detroit.

The students that I service are at a higher risk for not continuing their education due to risks such as low income, incarcerated parent, and living in high crime areas. My students are very sweet and eager to be exposed to many things. They love learning, and many go home and tell their families about activities we do in class. My school is PreK-8, which is very diverse. Our population is made up of African Americans, Bengalis, and Caucasians. My school has been recognized as a top school in Michigan; however, it is located deep in the city surrounded by abandoned and burned houses.

My Project

I will introduce these materials during morning gathering time and let them know they will be added to the house and block areas. Once the students go to worktime (play time), they will put them on and use their imaginations to transform themselves into their new identity which could be a dancer with a boa, a carpenter with his tools, or a fireman with his hat and truck. These dress up items will help introduce and help them recognize these community helpers when they see them around.

Since I teach low income students, the addition of these dress up items will help expose them to careers they can aspire to become.

This prekindergarten age is the perfect time to begin to mold these students into our future. They will be able to recognize the tools needed to perhaps become a community helper when they grow up.
