My 20 energetic first graders walk into our classroom each morning excited to learn, ready for what is in store for them. I teach in a Title I school in Newark, NJ where all students receive free/reduced breakfast and lunch.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and love coming to school to achieve success.
We begin each day with our school pledge; encouraging students to be ready, respectful, and responsible each day. Then we have morning meeting, where students share something that makes them special, or something that makes them proud. I want my students to know that I believe in them and I care about them.
My Project
My students enter the classroom each day ready to learn, but that can be difficult when basic needs are not met. Sadly, I see some of my students in need of the basics: underwear, socks, uniforms, and book bags.
I always have a large supply of socks in my classroom prize box, and they are the first things my students choose!
Last year, it was time for school picture day. One of my students came to school in a shirt that was too small, and the sleeves were ripped all the way up his arms. I gave him a new uniform shirt to put on, and he came back from the bathroom in his new clothes, smiling ear to ear! It is amazing what clean, crisp clothes can do for your confidence.
These items are fundamental to a student's well-being, and will help them stay focused on learning each day.
