Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are great. They love learning and they enjoy coming to school. My students are mostly immigrants or children of immigrants. Many are English language learners (ELLs). Nearly all students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch because their family's household incomes are below the poverty line.

My school is a large, crowded school, in a very large urban district.

This past year, we have had a lot of budget cuts. Fourteen staff members from our school were cut. Most of our budget has been used to keep the teachers and staff that we do have. Even though the school has limited resources, students have some of the highest test scores in the area.

My Project

Picture your World Language class from elementary or high school. For many of us, language classes were filled with boring grammar and vocabulary drills. This is not the experience I want for my students. Now picture a classroom filled with puppets and music and dancing and make-believe. This is my classroom. I want my students to enjoy their World Language class and practice using the language in context.

My students look forward to performing our French play all year!

It is the highlight of the year and many of my students continue to talk about the play for years after I am no longer their teacher. Students need costumes and props for the play including the police officer, alien, mother, narrators, train conductor, little girl, and boat captain. The costumes are what make the play really fun for students and they squeal with excitement when I bring them out.

The play gives students a real context for learning French. Students are motivated to practice their French at home because they know they will be performing. As a result of this integrated approach to learning language, students learn more than they ever would in a traditional curriculum and have so much more fun doing it!
