My students are, in a nutshell, fearless. My students' drive for learning, exploring, and creating is beyond measurable. Each and every one of them has a special niche they are exceptional at. The specialties range from developing artistic drawings and beautiful music to computer coding and 3D printing. The students come from all walks of life. Some have walked more challenging paths than others, but they love that when they are in my classroom they are all equal and are able to shine and teach others their talent.
Hands-on learning is the class's main mode of learning.
Kinesthetic and tactile movements are the key to success in my classroom, and the students blossom from this style of learning. The students have a variety of needs. Many of the needs are compensated by standing when they need to get energy out, working on the floor to feel more comfortable and exploring different options with flexible seating when available. In class they are able to work the materials, feel the numbers and letters, and develop higher order thinking questions on their own.
When I hear, "Man, time flies when you're having fun!" from a fourth grader, I know I've done my job.
My Project
Computer Science and coding is a rather fast growing field today. Students are being exposed to different aspects of computer science in my classroom and we are in need of filament, aka "ink", for our 3D printers.
With 3D printing we can make a variety of tools for in and outside of the classroom.
The filament is expensive for a club that is just a year old and has a high interest level. Students will start out by making a name tag to learn how to use the printing equipment and feel proud of their creation.
3D printing allows the students to think beyond the now and think about the how, why, and what to do to fix errors made while the printing occurs.
