My students need a 3D printer and an area in the classroom to create and bring their ideas to life.

My Students
My school is a melting pot of cultures. We have students from Korea, China, Africa, Mexico, Russia, the Philippines, and Japan; just to name a few. This causes many challenges for me as their teacher. Students everywhere need lots of hands-on activities to get them engaged, excited, and help them learn, even if they don't know the language. My class is no exception. My students are 7 and 8 years old and enjoy learning by doing.
Each year, it is more challenging to get students eager to learn about reading, math, and science.
Many students come to school with a poor or negative experience in these subjects. It's time to change that and get them involved in meaningful activities that help them change and leave my class with a "positive attitude".
Students want to learn and by giving them the tools to use in the classroom they will be more confident and achieve greater things. These tools will help bridge the gap between learning and language. Thus, inspiring them to work hard and learn by doing. They are our future and we need to invest in them now, while they are accepting and eager to explore. The "future" is now.
My Project
The world is quickly changing and my students are eager to meet the challenges of the future. The students will be using the 3D printer to create and improve on real life items and things that they can dream up.
The 3D printer will get students involved with research, critical thinking, problem solving, and team building skills.
The students can choose to create numerous projects in reading, math, and science. Small groups will create puppets, so they can present a play to the class on character traits. Another group, will create three dimensional shapes for math. For science, students will work in teams to design cars to race. We will research current designs and try to improve on them. We will also look at how China is using an enormous 3D printer to build houses and apartments out of recycled materials. By using the 3D printer, students will become curious about the world around them and look for ways to improve it.
Hands-on small group activities allow all students to become involved and communicate to solve real-world problems. It is important to get all students involved in class projects and learn by doing. This 3D printer will inspire even the most reluctant student.
Students who learn by doing are able to retain information quicker than the old school ways of drill and kill. I feel it is extremely important to bring resources into the classroom to inspire students to dream big. The future depends on it.
