Help me give my students an uplifting story about the power of art, finding your voice, and telling your story even when you’re out of step with your peers!
My students are an increasingly diversified group of learners at a Title I-funded school in Washington, DC. They are a creative and fun-loving group of children who benefit from our whole-child approach in an arts integration learning environment. When we foster a sense of belonging, significance and fun for each of them, we help to co-create the conditions under which they take charge of their own narratives.
My Project
Ada Twist, Scientist! by Andrea Beaty and David Roberts is an extremely popular book in our school community, a book where children see a protagonist that looks like them and has extra large dreams for their present and future. This same dynamic team has now given us Aaron Slater, Illustrator, a book that addresses a child's dream of being a storyteller but who faces some unique challenges in getting those words down on paper due to struggles with dyslexia. But eventually, inspiration strikes and Aaron finds a way of telling his stories in a way that is uniquely his.
This book will help our young learners realize that there are many ways to tell their stories and express their creativity, and that each of them has a set of unique talents through which to accomplish this feat.
The focus on neurodiversity will make this a truly inclusive reading project. We will have classroom based learning and projects around this title, and then each child will be able to take this book home to become part of their home library.
