My Project
Through out the school year, we complete 9 different units in Physics and Chemistry. My goal is to provide one hands-on STEM challenge for each unit. Hands-on STEM challenges engage students in the design and exploration process while they apply the science concepts learned and problem-solve along the way. Complex problems require creative solutions. Because of this, students learn to analyze questions both critically and creatively. Open-ended, STEM-focused activities cultivate creativity by motivating students to use science process skills, communication, and the resources provided to interpret the situation and solve the STEM challenge. The items on this list will provide supply options for many STEM challenges such as rubber band cars (force and motion), straw skyscrapers (process skills), slime (phase change), paper cup speaker (sound waves), sandwich bag ice cream (thermal energy), Plastic Spoon Catapult (potential and kinetic energy), just to name a few.
Teamwork is one of the most underrated and important drivers of success.
STEM challenges often involve hands-on projects that allow students to apply physical science concepts in a fun and engaging way. Building a simple catapult or rubber band car often involves multiple steps that are completed with teamwork and problem-solving. In the process of STEM education, students learn how to manage their time and break larger projects into smaller steps working toward a goal. This is a skill that will help them throughout their lives, whether they are working on an office project or completing a home remodel in the future.
