Dream Big Band? Play the Tuba

My Students

Students live as far as 16 miles away from their school and reside across 81 different zip codes in San Diego County to attend our school, a tuition-free public magnet school for artistically passionate students. Students choose to audition and attend our school where a rigorous academic program is offered in conjunction with a comprehensive study in the arts taught by full-time qualified, credentialed, and professionally trained educators. It is a place where artistic talent can be nurtured and developed.

Students are eager to learn and are passionate about the arts.

They see themselves as Scholars, Citizens, Professionals, and Artists with a voice that can be expressed through pen, movement, instrument, stage, canvas, photography, and film. All students in grades 6-12 audition into their chosen major (Creative Writing, Dance, Music, Theatre, and Visual and media Arts) and program of study. Students who pursue Music, focus on one of three programs of study: Jazz Studies, Orchestra, or Vocal Arts. The Jazz Studies and Orchestra programs are young and growing. Instruments are needed to give all students the opportunity to become emerging artists in the 21st century and to prepare for post-secondary.

My Project

That moment when a student smiles big, their eyes widen and face lights up when notes are played on an instrument for the first time. A new instrument unlocks the musician deep inside. Whether it be a new saxophone, a keyboard or a TUBA, the transformation and impact is the same. Tubas are found in orchestras as well as concert bands. Our concert band program is a burgeoning new program. Students are eager to learn and contribute to its growth and success. The tuba is the foundation of the orchestral sound and is played in ensembles with other musicians teaching students how to listen and play together. Students will learn how to care for their instrument, proper posture, breathing technique, scales, musical notation, and music theory. Students work in small groups alongside professional coaches allowing for focused and in-depth instruction. All students will have performance opportunities whether in juries, as part of the Premier season, or in the community. A donation will help put a tuba in students' hands now and for many years to come. Life-long impact and value.

Equity is the heart of what our school does by providing every child regardless of background or socioeconomic status the opportunity to pursue their dreams and goals.

Our pre-conservatory model, sequential training, and study in the arts prepare all students for post-secondary readiness. What makes it all even more remarkable is that any student who is passionate and demonstrates potential can access our school for free.
