My Students
My students are wonderfully diverse, with at least 20 different languages spoken in our elementary school.
They are vibrant, creative, energetic, love exploring ideas, and making and building things, which makes my art class perfect for them.
Every student in my school, kindergarten through 5th grade, comes through my art class. Some of the students are recent immigrants just learning English, some struggle academically, many speak English as a second, third or even fourth language, many come from low-income homes or have experienced homelessness.
My Project
Many of my 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students love to hand sew in my art classroom. They have been sewing small pillows and stuffed animals with much enthusiasm and pride.
Some of them have so much enthusiasm that they started designing larger projects that go beyond hand sewing and require a machine, such as bags and clothing.
I want to help these students realize their designs without becoming discouraged, which is where a sewing machine for my classroom comes in. My classroom emphasizes problem solving and creativity and a sewing machine adds another layer and complexity to the student's artistic process.
