My students need drawing paper, water soluble pencils, drawing tools, 2 anatomical skeletons, and posters so they can continue to get better at drawing from observation.
Many kids enter my high school art class for the first time with a sense of trepidation. Art, however, is a great teaching tool, and I firmly believe anyone can learn to draw. Students stretch their brains in art. By the end of the course, students have made leaps forward and they draw much better.
Our high school is a gem.
It's an academic magnet public school. Our students come from all over the city. Three quarters live below the poverty line. Over 90% of our students graduate and go onto college or trade school.
Teaching here is most rewarding. My students are extremely bright and caring people. Talking to them gives me hope. This school is a very special place!
The arts are a critical dimension in the education of our future leaders. My students have raised the bar for me as a teacher. I continuously strive to meet the needs of my students. By being able to provide adequate supplies, I can push my students to the next level.
I know they are capable. While my students don't take my class because they are budding artists, it's a requirement; they end up increasing their drawing skills far beyond their own expectations.
My Project
I have requested drawing paper, water soluble pencils, drawing tools, two anatomical skeletons, and posters so my students can continue to get better at drawing from observation.
Picture this: an art room packed with 32 bright high schoolers. They are confronted today with a pair of 30 inch tall skeletons. Students have already studied anatomy in science. Now it's time to draw the skeleton.
Students make a series of gesture drawings so they can determine proportions. Then we try to draw with the wrong hand. After a few activities to loosen up, students measure and plot out the skeletons.
Next lesson: perspective. Students use the visual resource perspective posters to learn the basics of perspective. We examine images artists made using perspective. Now, let's put this information into practice by going outside to draw the urban landscape.
Students make one and two point perspective drawings. They use pencil measuring, block in tone, erase the highlights. We return to the classroom and use water to blend the water soluble pencil marks. The goal in art is to see and understand the world. Learning to draw teaches students to observe, plan, and interpret their worlds.
Your donation to this project will improve my classroom because the materials I have requested are high quality drawing materials.
My students are already engaged and articulate. By providing them with water soluble pencils, drawing kits, skeletons, great visual resources, and a generous amount of drawing paper, they will be able to stretch beyond what they already can do.
