Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For the first time in the history of my school my students will have an art program. However we have a tiny budget and we don't even have money to have proper drawing pencils and paper.
My students are low-income, gang-impacted, new immigrant, first in their family to go to college aspirants.
They are creative and face many challenges, such as poor nutrition and constant violence in the streets. Many of them are English learners and they express themselves visually.
My Project
For some of my students, this is the first time that they are drawing anything! They have the skill level of a grade school kid but they are very inspired. We have been drawing on recycled paper which is fine but it does not allow us to do bigger, more refined work.
Art is healing and it allows my students to use another part of their brains.
They only have experience using 2B pencils so this set of drawing pencils and papers will allow them to create more tonal value and sophistication.
