Drawing on Our Love of Drawing Boosts Literacy Skills

My students need twelve how-to-draw books.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Barton's classroom raised $270

This project is fully funded

I am the school librarian in an elementary school facing daunting challenges, including poverty and neighborhood violence. This is the third year that our library has been open and I am working to build an appealing, beneficial collection. This is especially difficult this year, as there is no money in the school budget for the library.

My students love coming into the library to select books. A number of them are visual, tactile learners. This means they like to draw. We have a small collection of battered how-to-draw books for them. My budding artists are often disappointed when they cannot find a drawing book to check out or the available books do not address their drawing interests.

The titles I have selected represent the best drawing books for young people. The instructions are clear and detailed and the subjects are exactly what my artists have been requesting. When they are drawing, my students think they are having fun. What I know is that they are learning to follow "steps in a process," an important life skill. They are also schooling themselves to be patient, deliberate, and attentive to details. While they are developing their creativity, they are also improving their academic skills!

We have no art teacher in our school, and classroom teachers cannot take time for art. My students are hungry for creative outlets. Your gift would enable students to express themselves in positive ways. As they improve their drawing abilities, they will develop self-confidence and self-esteem. Academic skills will also improve. In addition, my students will have concrete evidence that books can supply answers to questions - exactly what a librarian wants them to know.
