This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Transitioning into distance learning for our students has been especially challenging. Many of these children haven't had access and were only recently given devices within the last 2 weeks. ALL of our students receive Title I funding due to their socio-economic status. Many of our students are also English Language Learners which makes it even more challenging for their parents to understand and help them access what they need digitally. Since we have started remote teaching, our children haven't had many opportunities to be creative and use their minds and hands to create things. All of our students live in apartment buildings and have limited opportunities to be outside for gross motor play.
My Project
Since school has gone into remote learning the opportunity to draw and write is dwindling. Children need to have that fine motor practice, that part of their brains engaged to create and just some time away from their devices.
Free expression is essential for overall health and well-being.
When we give our students this outlet, it can help relieve stress and work through things happening in their lives. Right now, our children need and deserve more. Creating art gives young learners a way to practice a wide range of skills that are useful not only for life, but also for learning. Some of those include; Fine Motor Skills, Cognitive Development, Math and Language Skills just to name a few.
