Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
On a typical day in my classroom, my students will be working on any number of projects. We have class assignments to work on every single day but also contest entries, special projects and school decorations to create. My classroom is a busy place.
My students come from low socioeconomic households.
Our school is ninety-five percent free or reduced price lunch. We have an Art Magnet program at our school that requires an audition to enroll. Many of my students come to school early so that they can work on their classwork or work on special projects. During this time, I let them try out new materials or propose ideas for new projects. My students are never satisfied with good enough. They are always trying to learn new techniques that will improve their skills. For many of my students, art is the one place where they can excel and make their voices heard. The work that my students create has been recognized locally and nationally. I want my students to be proud of the work that they produce. By entering contests and exhibitions, my students have a chance to be recognized for their hard work and creativity.
My Project
These materials will allow my students to have varied experiences with drawing and painting materials. As an art teacher, I have personally observed how valuable it is for students to have numerous opportunities to create drawings and paintings.
All of these materials will provide opportunities for students to learn from their success as well as their mistakes.
I teach my students that mistakes are a big part of the learning process. We learn how to correct them and how to avoid them in the future.
Using the canvas and acrylic paints, my students will create landscape paintings. This lesson is a chance for them to use their knowledge of color mixing and painting techniques to create a large-scale realistic artwork.
I believe that allowing my students to create a variety of artworks with these materials will help them explore and develop their individual creative abilities.
We'll be using the copy paper to sketch ideas, plan and print out reference images for projects. The decorative fruits, charcoal and markers will be used to practice drawing skills. Before students can paint, they must learn the basics of drawing. They will create still life drawings in charcoal and marker. These drawings provide low-stakes opportunities for improving the observation skills necessary to create more advanced drawings and paintings.
More than half of students from low‑income households
