This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every little thing they write, scribble, or craft, brings children that much closer to being able to express themselves and communicate! I want to provide my students with materials that are both fun to use and helpful as a means to an end: becoming literate.

I currently teach 21 kindergarten students in a pre-k through eighth grade school.

I have a classroom full of little scientists and smiling explorers - unfortunately, we are in a public school in an urban, low income area. There is a wonderful art teacher, but unfortunately she is unable to work with all of the grades. Therefore my kindergarten students do not have the opportunity to go to the art room. Studies have shown how important art can be for children's developing minds. These supplies will enable me to bring art to my classroom.

My Project

I am trying to fill my classroom with opportunity! Children love to create in any media - art and writing supplies fulfill a need to write, draw, color, express, PLAY - role play and learn. All this allows them to be children - which is great practice for becoming adults! I am requesting clay that will help strengthen and develop fine motor skills. The rollers will add a new dimension to their role-play (pun intended!) Paper and paint go hand in hand with expressing oneself especially when you are just beginning to grasp that lines on paper have meaning. With these supplies and the complimentary pieces, my students will step outside themselves to create and communicate. The resultant role-play helps build mutual understanding and social boundaries.

Hands On!

"Look everyone, I did that!" When my students see their work posted on a bulletin board or hung on a wall, they smile and show it to another student. They believe their work is important and so they try harder to produce even better pieces. Can you see how important that is? I can teach - but they have to be able to produce work, feel proud and grow as they learn.
