Dramatic Play, Writing, and Reading!

My Students

I might be a little biased, but I teach the most wonderful kindergarteners around! They are the type of kids who strive to learn and do their best! Everyday they tell me how much they love school (and oh, how it's shown)!

I teach students from a very diverse community where the culture is rich.

Over 56% of Ogden students are ethnic minorities and 75% come from low-income homes. Our school has less population than most elementary schools, therefore the students have tight knit relationships.

At the beginning of the year, the majority of my students had a lot to learn! Most didn't know the alphabet, some didn't know how to hold a pencil, some kids didn't know how to count, or how to interact with other kids. On the other hand, others were working on learning the sounds of the alphabet, knew how to write their name, and some were even reading.

That being said, all of them are hungry for knowledge! It's truly amazing to watch the growth of every single one of them!

My Project

As a kindergarten teacher, I make sure dramatic play is in the schedule, because I truly believe there is no better way to learn those important life skills. These materials will make a difference in my students' learning, by letting them use their imagination to play with others, all while building life-long social skills.

The materials will provide them with opportunities to learn important social skills, through dramatic play, during center time.

They will play with the kitchen and store using the items that are being requested. Each month, the store will have a different theme, such as a "pumpkin patch", "farmer's market", or a "hot cocoa store", etc. These materials will help build this center into a real life atmosphere for my students.

Some of the other materials will also help them learn new skills, but in the writing center. They will choose stickers and stamps and have to write the word for each object. This helps with sounding out words, writing, and reading.

Lastly, I wanted to add some new, rich literature to our class library to help teach them life lessons.
