Dramatic Play To Help Pre-K!

My students need a dramatic play kitchen set to jump start and enhance their imaginative play.

This project is fully funded

I teach a special education pre-kindergarten class for children with severe handicaps, including mental retardation and autism, in a high-need urban community in California.

My students have very little opportunity to play with toys at home, so I have tried to create opportunities to work on pretend play in the classroom, as it leads to being able to predict and create hypothesis later in life. They have been using the same play kitchen that my youngest sister used when she was growing up, 15 years ago. The edges are cracked and it is held up mostly by tape, by my students love the kitchen and I don't want to get rid of it without a replacement!

I would love for my students to have a real play kitchen that is safe and sturdy as well as other play items that can help increase their imaginations. By providing these high-need students with tangible dramatic play items, they will be able to extend their play from the concrete to the imagined.

Your help will make it possible to create foundations for later learning opportunities for these students, as play is truly the most significant way my students learn.
