Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My second language learners have imagination, creativity, and a love of learning that is just waiting to explode and flourish if only they had the tools and support to help them do so.
My students come from a mostly lower socioeconomic demographic, and many do not speak English at home.
Most of the students qualify for a free lunch, have limited resources at home, and stay at school until the early evening because of their hard working parents who are trying to make it. Our school does its best to inspire the kids and bring the curriculum to life. But the challenges of limited budgets and language barriers make that mission difficult.
My Project
My 5th graders have been inspired by the Lily Sarah Grace Fund, to fuse dramatic arts and technology in a collaborative, inquiry-based manner. Dramatic reenactments of stories is one my students' favorite activities. Drama allows students to express their own vision of what is read and learned in a method that comes naturally to creative thinkers. They will learn to write screenplays, act out, and record short plays by using the iPad's iPhoto, iMovie, and built-in camera functions. Students will also be able to write and create multimedia presentations to showcase or "pitch" their creative ideas to their peers. By having to present in this manner, students will be critically analyzing each others proposals, synthesizing information, and evaluating the best ideas. Students will finally be able to collaborate, learn real-world skills, and express themselves in a way that they never have before.
When students are able participate in the multiple steps of designing, creating, and presenting their own movies, they also gain interview, interpersonal, problem-solving and assessment skills.
This "digital generation" needs outlets that appeal to diverse learning styles and capitalize on students' creative talents. Please support my project Lily Sarah Grace Fund and promote creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking in my classroom and throughout my inner city school. Thank you.
