My Students

My students are extremely talented at singing, acting, and dancing. The annual spring concert is performed in our school auditorium, which is old and has extremely challenging acoustics for voice projection. Their young voices get swallowed up in the immense space with the super high ceilings.

These wonderful young people are in grades six to eight, in a Title One, inner city, New York public middle school.

Our school promotes community service and performing arts. The scholars (as we call them) wear uniforms everyday, and are given opportunities to explore their creative abilities through drawing, African dance, singing, and acting. Every year we produce a show in the spring. Rehearsals have already begun. This will be the first year we include drama. There will be excerpts from selected Broadway plays. The school does not own the wireless microphones needed for this performance, and we do not have a budget for the show. Since this is something we do every year, we are hoping that you will help us to promote the talent of our children, with the professional style that they deserve.

My Project

The scholars are working very hard to memorize their parts for the plays in which they are acting. They come to after school rehearsals to work on the production and direction of the play. They are all new at acting, so as they learn about the craft of being an actor, they are also preparing their performances. It would be a shame for them to work so hard, and then when they perform, the audience would not be able to clearly hear what they are saying because of the lack of the proper audio projection of their voices. Most of these children have never seen a Broadway play, or for that matter, a professional dramatic production. This exposure is taking care of two things at once; teaching youngsters about the art of acting, and exposing them to an important literary form - the play. Performing a play is so much more tangible educationally than simply reading it. So, all wrapped up in one package, we have promotion of the arts and enrichment of literacy.

I teach my scholars that whatever they do, it must be their best possible effort.

Our scholars are extremely talented and need to know that there are people who admire their zest, their will to work at their craft and who believe in their ability to achieve excellence in a challenge that they take upon themselves. This project gets them out from in front of the television or the computer screen and into the creative channels of their own minds. Please help us.
