My students, as many across the country, have had to contend with many learning disruptions due to COVID, including exclusions for exposures and smoke days due to hazardous air quality from wildfires. In addition, last year we had music once a week to reduce exposures and had music class outside while singing and doing movement activities if possible. This resulted in students having fewer opportunities to play instruments.
This project will help students work together and create ensembles using different size recorders.
Music making along with collaborating will help students social and emotional health as well as sense of accomplishment.
Many of my students are from low income households and cannot afford to get their own instruments. Our Dragons have formed a community for the staff and students to be able to experience education in a positive way. The students here are eager to learn new things and participate in group work in music.
My Project
I am requesting recorders to give my students a chance to play as an ensemble using different size recorders creating depth in their music education. Students enjoy coming to music and working together to generate musical ideas (MU:Cr1.4.3). When teaching recorders each student must have their own recorder as we cannot clean instruments between classes. Many students choose to get their own soprano recorder or they may check them out from the school to use. By providing a chance for the students to be able to play different size recorders it will make the collaboration even more interesting with the varying tonalities.
Recorders are a staple of fourth grade music education and with guidance students will be able to perform age appropriate literature (MU:Pr4.4.1) as well as create their own music using iconic or standard notation (MU:Pr4.4.3) in groups with the bass, tenor, alto, and sopranino recorders.
Students will be able to combine the already owned instruments with these to perform in small ensembles.
