My students need to be physically engaged in their learning. We need three tables and 12 balance balls that will support middle school students.

My Students

Did you know that most middle school students do not get any type of physical activity? Our school can only support a limited number of students in P.E. class each day, and our students do not get recess. Help my students keep their brains and bodies active by getting rid of half of our desks!

The students who enter my room are 10-14 years old.

They come from every level of wealth/poverty, although many know the struggles of limited income. Some come hungry, many are tired (because they are growing!), and they need a way to pay attention in a class that many of them see as tedious. I teach future leaders, doctors, lawyers, and success stories that will be wonderful to hear one day. My classroom is multicultural, multiracial, and fun! We learn through VERY high expectations (often accompanied by the sounds of grumbling), and our success rate is soaring!

My Project

This year, I have made it a priority to help my students learn in very creative ways. This involved taking the desks out of rows, putting them into groups, and trying to substitute as many desks as I could for group tables/chairs. These are VERY hard to find, and I was only able to get three tables into my classroom, leaving three groups of desks. These three additional tables and 12 balance balls would replace the remaining desks and chairs. Research has shown that replacing traditional desks with tables and stability balls increases student awareness in the classroom, since they are physically (thus mentally) engaged. Providing exercise balls for half our room would give students the best of both worlds--times to sit on the stability balls and times to sit at more traditional tables with chairs. These new supplies will keep them alert, awake, and ready to learn. (This is a GREAT success if one can achieve it with 13-14 year-olds!)

Honestly, hardly anyone funds middle school projects.

Why? Because almost everyone hated middle school. It is a time of difficulty, growing, internal/external struggle--almost every adult can remember a reason that they hated middle school. If for no other reasons, help some of today's students like it . . . just a little. Maybe it will make a difference!
