My Students
Have you ever walked into a store, restaurant, or a house that had no air conditioning on a hot summer day? We have all been there, we all know how uncomfortable it is, and how difficult it is to focus.
I am a first year art teacher who teaches kindergarten through eighth grade in a low income, high poverty community.
My 250+ students are incredible artists and very eager to learn. We have received AMAZING materials through Donors Choose that I am extremely grateful for (as are my students!) and I want to create an environment where my students feel comfortable emotionally and physically.
My Project
I have between 30-48 students in each class that I teach. When the temperature is over 70, our room becomes a sauna and it is difficult for my students to concentrate on their work. They LOVE to paint, but it takes a very long time for the paint to dry before they can move on to the next step of their project due to the heat. My students are required to wear a uniform to school that consists of a white polo shirt and long navy pants. Their heavy clothing, in addition to the large class size, adds to the unbearable heat.
I was extremely fortunate to have gone to schools that had air conditioning and I never realized how much of an impact it had on learning. When you’re hot, it becomes difficult to focus, you become sweaty and irritable as well as having headaches and nausea. With the amount of students I have in my room combined with the temperature outside, the smell is almost as intolerable as the heat. I truly believe that a cool room will lead to a productive room.
My students deserve so much more then what they are given.
They are extraordinary people that truly make the best out of every situation that they are in. Art has become an incredible outlet for my students and I want to do everything that I can for them to continue to have that.
