Dr. Seuss on the Loose!

Help me give my students some classic literature that we all grew up reading! Everyone knows Dr. Seuss books but for most of my students, the only exposure to Dr. Seuss is from movies that they have seen.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Higa's classroom raised $1,025

My Students

"Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today." - Malcolm X

With the situation of our world today, I want to be able to help my students prepare for a future where they believe in themselves, no matter who or where they are.

We are a Title I School in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Most of the students at my school are English Language Learners and 100% of the students participate in the free breakfast and lunch program.

My kindergartners are very enthusiastic and eager to learn. For most of them, kindergarten is their first school experience. I teach a class of 20 little learners with many different ability levels. My students need exposure to the same concepts in different ways. My students are motivated to learn but lack the needed materials at home to fully understand or actively participate in my lessons. Many of their parents are not able to provide the academic materials that they need due to loss of employment because of the pandemic. Although my students are considered socio-economically disadvantaged, they deserve the same opportunities to enhance their learning as anyone else.

My Project

My little Kindergarteners have learned their letters and sounds and are now ready to use those sounds to form words. I would love to provide my students with books that they can read by themselves, giving them confidence and a love for reading, which is becoming increasingly rare these days. Theodor Geisel can help me do that!

I have seen their excitement as they blend sounds together and realize that they are reading- the smile on their face is priceless!

Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, wrote his books specifically for kids so that they could develop a joy for reading. Anyone who grew up reading Dr. Seuss books remembers them with warmth in their heart.

Due to the pandemic, my students are learning from home, making read-alouds very difficult. These books will allow my students to follow along as I read them the story. And the icing on the cake is that they will have their own copy of the book to read again and again.

With the timer, I can even provide 'Independent Reading Time' during distance learning. From my youth, I always remember the non-profit organization called RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) and with these materials, I hope to instill the idea that reading is FUNdamental for my students.
