Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 10-12 grade high school Chemistry to a talented group of Latino and African American students. These students have withstood so much adversity to be on the verge of graduating - something that no one else in their family has done. They have survived gangs, violence, drug dealing on the streets where they live, and students all around them dropping out of school.

This past Christmas, I gave each one of my homeroom students a journal wrapped in beautiful Christmas paper with a bow. I expected my students to tear right into that paper. To my surprise, every single student kept the present to put under their Christmas tree. I was so touched. For some of my students it was the only Christmas present they got this year. This event showed me how much students treasure and value gifts like that. For some of my seniors, graduating high school is an achievement that will basically go unnoticed in their families. I want them to know how important of an accomplishment it is and how proud I am of them.

Every year, I scrounge for coupons to buy copies of the Dr. Seuss book "Oh, The Places You'll Go" to give to a few select graduating seniors. It's a touching book that I give to a few students to recognize their accomplishments. These students are generally the ones I've known for 2-3 years and have worked with me on their skills to prepare to attend a 4 year university - also a first in their families. Some of them even earn scholarships to pay for their entire education. What an accomplishment. I want to be able to give those students a beautiful bound version of the Dr. Seuss classic with a handwritten message from me celebrating their accomplishments. I want them to be proud of what they have done.

Please help me give this gift to my students. In the past, it has meant so much and my graduates return to tell me how college is going (or to ask for my phone number for tutoring). I'm glad that the bond we have formed allow them to feel comfortable and supported in their college endeavors even after they leave high school. Thank you for helping me support these students.
