Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For so many New York City school children things that tourists take for granted are frequently off-limits. Most of my students for example, although they live not too far from Yankee Stadium, have never been to a game. The same is true with most museums. This fall the Children's Museum of Manhattan is having a special exhibit about Dr. Seuss. I teach second grade and I do a unit on Dr. Seuss every year (as every 2nd grade teacher probably should). The remarkable thing about Dr. Seuss's writing is that he has books for beginning/emergent readers as well as books for the most advanced second graders. His work can be used to teach everything from phonics and phonemic awareness to poetry to the basic elements of literature (problem-solution, main idea, etc.) Above all Dr. Seuss makes reading fun. In addition last year we began a computer/literacy program called Breakthrough to Literacy which includes a biography of Dr. Seuss. (Did you know that Dr. Seuss's first book, "To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street" was turned down by 27 publishers!! I didn't. Talk about a valuable lesson in perseverance.) In addition to the book, the kids also explore Dr. Seuss's life through computer activities. The perfect complement and culminating activity for this unit would be a trip to the Dr. Seuss exhibit which will be at the museum through April. It costs $90/per class for the tour and a related learning activity. Unfortunately our school does not have the funds to support such a field trip, even with its obvious academic relevance. This will be a great experience for my kids, really helping to make literature come alive for them. To see more about the Museum and the Seuss program visit www.cmom.org. Thank you for your consideration.
