This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are enthusiastic, bilingual book worms! Every morning they ask, "How much time do we have for reading stamina?" They're so cute, always trying to negotiate getting more and more time to read! Think about how reading different types books made you feel! Visualize your anticipation, and the great time you had as waited for books to arrive through a book order. My students love reading and they're always happy when I purchase new books for our classroom library! I can only imagine how highly motivated they are going to continue improving their reading skills as they devour new books in Spanish and English. However, my inquisitive students live in an impoverished urban area and most parents do not have financial resources to buy them a variety of engaging reading material.

As English Language Learners in a dual-language program it is essential to engage students in high interest reading materials that support both languages.

I have been an elementary teacher in the Bell/Cudahy, CA for 27 years. I would love for my students to have access to culturally relevant books as way to motivate them to continue their journey in achieving bi-literacy!

My Project

My students will read these books to practice reading both independently as they increase their reading stamina and in small group settings with their peers.

Students will be trained to read in literature circles with their friends and also to have rich conversations about grade level books.

I can't wait to see them reading book after book which will help improve both their Spanish and English literacy skills. This experience will hook all the readers in my classroom into loving reading for life. I can't think of a more beautiful gift to give a child than the love of reading.
