FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. A.'s classroom raised $640
This project is fully funded
I am fortunate to teach all areas in 2nd grade at a Title 1 school in North Carolina.
Recently, my children and I celebrated "Read Across America" in our school. In doing so, they expressed an interest in having more Dr. Seuss materials and rhyming games in the classroom.
We would like to begin a unit of study by exploring Seussville on the Internet in order to become familiar with more books and rhyme patterns from this celebrated author, Dr. Seuss. Next, with partners, we will explore the biography of his life to find out more about how he became a writer. Each day we explore his biography and thereafter, we will have an oral reading time to share some of his books and come up with ideas as to how he created each book. We will then take the opportunity of writing to create works of written expression that include rhyme patterns.
Once we have the chance to practice, we will create our own books on the Barebooks items requested. During spelling time, we will sing our way through phonics and explore phonics patterns presented in Dr. Seuss's books with the spelling program we are requesting. This will be a great chance to practice with our overhead phonics set as well. The children will engage in experiments throughout our unit of study on Dr. Seuss such as exploring primary and secondary colors after reading "One Fish, Two Fish," or making Oobleck after reading "Barthalomew and the Oobleck."
Each book I requested and those I borrow from peers involve a plan taken from ideas that are either posted on the web or invented. This will give us the opportunity to include science concepts such as properties and matter in our lessons. We will learn about how Dr. Suess included character education in his works as we create plays based on his books. Children will have access to all the books during silent reading time to explore.
I feel it would benefit the children greatly to share in one another's successes while they are learning. We hope to explore rhymes so we can become better readers, writers, and spellers while working cooperatively in the process. Our children will feel confident and proud of their accomplishments.
As a class, we would like to request a set of beginner Dr. Seuss books with accompanying tapes, a higher level Dr. Seuss set of readers, a set of phonics overhead teaching resources, and a "Sing Your Way Through Phonics" spelling activity set on a variety of levels. Out of curiosity, the children requested a chance to explore Dr. Seuss's life and his works. Our exploration will lead the children to become better readers, spellers and writers while experiencing the writings and life of Dr. Seuss.
