My Students
Our school is in the heart of Brooklyn, NY. It includes students from Pre-K to eighth grade, and it is a melting pot of descendants from the West Indies. The school is in a high poverty area, and about 95% of the students in the school receive free lunch. There are 18 energetic, three and four-year-old children in my class but there are not a lot of funds to enrich these students' education because of the budget cuts and although our families give us support they can't always help out financially.
My Project
Play dough is always a hot spot in our classroom during choice time at the beginning of the year as children are always rushing to get a spot with the dough cutters or other dough tools. We've seen children use cutters to make "cookies" and we've seen things made from their own imaginations when they play. We've seen lots of things from pepperoni pizza slices that are shared among friends and teachers to animals or skyscrapers.
Using play dough (or in fact any type of dough) with young children is beneficial in so many ways.
The malleable properties of play dough make it fun for investigation and exploration as well as secretly building up strength in all the tiny hand muscles and tendons, making them ready for pencil and scissor control later on.
With the large tubs we are able to take out enough to fill our small containers and save the rest for a later date without it getting hard and drying out.
