This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Murder, greed, ambition, and fear. Sounds like the ingredients for a good movie, right? These ingredients also make for a really good book. They are the key elements of William Shakespeare's brilliant dramatic tragedy, Macbeth.
My students (largely minorities who qualify for the free-reduced price lunch program) have not yet been exposed to the greatness of William Shakespeare.
I plan to introduce my students to Shakespeare this school year through his most accessible play, Macbeth. My students will love the complexities of the play's characters and the study of kings and witches.
My Project
For this proposal, I am requesting copies of Shakespeare's tragedy, Macbeth for my students to read. We will spend six weeks in-class reading, analyzing, annotating, and acting out the play. By providing students with their own copies of the play, they will be able to make annotations as they read -- a valuable skill that encourages critical thinking and allows students to make deeper connections to the text. With their own text, my students will be able to see themselves as scholars, studying important literature.
Reading this play will prepare my students for college by providing them with the skills needed to handle complex works of literature.
It will also provide them with the cultural capital needed for advanced study and the world beyond.
