This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the biggest obstacles students face in high school is keeping organized. Ask them to open their folders and you're liable to find trigonometry homework from last semester next to yesterday's class notes on The Great Gatsby.

In my 18 years teaching in New York City, I've learned that students who do not keep organized tend to fall behind.

I currently teach English at a high-needs school, where more than 95 percent of the students are minorities who qualify for the free/reduced-priced lunch program. My students, in general, do not have the money for even the most basic of school supplies.

My Project

For this proposal, I am requesting copies of Shakespeare's tragedy, Macbeth for my students to read. We will spend six weeks in class reading, analyzing, annotating, and acting out the play. By providing students with their own copies of the play, they will be able to make annotations as they read -- a valuable skill that encourages critical thinking and allows students to make deeper connections to the text. With their own text, my students will be able to see themselves as scholars, studying important literature.

Reading this play will prepare my students for college by providing them with the skills needed to handle complex works of literature.

It will also provide them with the cultural capital needed for advanced study and the world beyond.
