My students need paper clips, thumb tacks, miniature lamps, buzzers, and lots of copper wire to build working telegraphs.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Long before Twitter there was another communication medium that encouraged brevity, the telegraph. The ability to send brief messages across the country in a fraction of a second had a tremendous impact on the history of the United States.
I teach a fantastic group of students that love to be active learners.
They do a great job with traditional reading and writing assignments, but they absolutely love hands-on projects, activities that draw on students' sense of inquiry and allow them to build greatly increase student interest.
My Project
In today's digital world in which information travels around the world in milliseconds it is difficult for students to relate to a past in which being able to send a few words across the country was a communication revolution. By researching, building and using a telegraph my students will gain a much better understanding of how the telegraph influenced US history.
This project will give my students first-hand knowledge on how telegraphs work.
Furthermore, it will help them think about the issue of communication in nineteenth century America.
