This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Waste not, want not! Laminating is awesome! I make tons of reusable materials for my class and laminating helps preserve them for years.

My students are a fantastic group of first graders in Northern California.

Our school is located in, and thus serves a low income community. While it is true that our students face some of the typical challenges of living in a low income area (like pollution, gang violence etc.) they remain a delightful and eager group of children who come to school excited and ready to learn, grow and have fun! And our school is like an island of peace, safety and community which for many of our children is the only safe place for them to play, socialize and get a quality education.

My Project

I have a small laminating machine for my classroom that I use more than any other tool. I design a lot of my own materials and work mats and I have found that by laminating them they last for years and years. One of the added benefits of laminating is that you can then use those materials to write on and wipe off with dry erase markers, grease pencils and even crayons. This has been especially useful in math for reusable work mats, and the children love the departure from typical pencil and paper type work. Another benefit is that laminating actually brightens colors so I have designed many wall displays and laminated them for bright, crisp and durable placards that can be used for reference and even written on and later cleaned for reuse. You cannot look anywhere in my room and not find laminated reference charts everywhere. It can also be used to preserve student work for years.

The laminating film is such a useful material but it is expensive and our school stopped purchasing it years ago.

By donating to this project you help me make and preserve bright and beautiful materials for years of use in all areas of our learning environment.
