My students need bacterial culture supplies to study how and where germs grow.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our small school is located in New York. We are a small school housed within a campus of many small schools. As we service students primarily from the surrounding neighborhood, our students represent a multiculturally diverse and disadvantaged urban population.
All of our students are recent immigrants to the United States and therefore face an up-hill struggle not only to learn the subject matter, but also to acclimate to a new culture and language.
We also have a very large Special Needs population that has difficulty with the complex concepts associated with science.
We use hands-on experimental design projects to engage and enrich the learning experience in the field of science. These activities call upon a students' ability to make observations and create models and drawings to represent and explain the world around them. With the use of bacterial growth culture media and the necessary chemical reagents, students can see for themselves how these essential life forms grow, multiple and compete in the micro-environment of the petri dish.
My Project
Using a hands-on experience adds an element to the learning process that Second Language Learners and Special Needs students find extremely useful. It is also a way for students to demonstrate what they have learned, and (more importantly) what they have not learned.
If students are engaged and are active participants in their classes, they learn better. Laboratory experiments also tap into one of the ways students learn best. I believe that I can better service my students and help them understand science concepts in greater depth if I can reach them using multiple teaching strategies and tools.
Having access to the materials they need to create experiments that demonstrate how bacteria grow on various surfaces and on our hands is the best way for them to understand this concept.
My ultimate goal is to help my students understand and be able to explain what they have learned in science.
Writing and critical thinking skills are the criteria used by colleges for acceptance and placement. My goal is to have students placed at the colleges of their choice.
Please
help me help those most in need. Your act of kindness and generosity will have a long lasting impact on our students.
Thank you for your generosity.
