This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine trying to focus in your high school English class while sitting at a desk made for a fourth grader. Imagine trying to get any work accomplished at your desk when surrounded by years old graffiti and gum littering your personal work space. When students are expected to sit at dirty, broken desks, just how well are they able to focus? Not much.

After a hard year and a half of learning at home, students are eager to return to classroom.

For my students, a diverse group of enthusiastic teenagers who come from homes which lack proper work spaces, school becomes the only place where studying happens. Coming from places like Egypt or Ecuador, my students are ready and willing to put forth the effort needed to succeed.

My Project

In order to help my students succeed in the classroom, I am asking for new desks that will provide them with a safe, clean work space. The desks in the classroom I inherited several years ago are littered with graffiti, gum, and general gunk from former students who used them. Most of the desks are broken, with sharp metal edges snagging students' clothing.

Having new desks will allow my students to focus on their reading, writing, and critical thinking instead of worrying about the desk collapsing or getting their clothes ruined or dirty.

The tables I am requesting will allow for multiple configurations, meaning students can work in pairs or in groups easily. They can also be arranged to set up for Socratic Seminars and other activities

By having nice, usable desks, students can feel comfortable and ready to learn. New desks will also reinforce the value of taking care of our classroom environment and maintaining a safe, clean space.
